Saptami is the day when the battle between Maa Durga and Mahisasura had begun, and which would be culminated 2 days later, on Nabami. On this day, Maa Durga took the form of Goddess Kalratri, or kalaratri, (the dark night), which is the most unforgiving and ferocious form of Durga Mata. This form is particularly known for removing darkness of knowledge from Her devotee’s minds. For Bengalis, this is a very special day, and proper and full fledged worship of Durga Maa happens from this day. Kalabou, which is a banana plant revered as Lord Ganesh’s wife, is bathed in a nearby waterbody, and is placed beside the deity, before the puja begins officially. The fervor in Bengal is magnanimous, where all the celebrating Hindus begin to throng the streets and start their pandel hopping, adda (meetings of celebrations), dining out, and immersing themselves in fun and frolic, and catching up with old friends.
