Extension
Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Seattle Seahawks — 4 Years, $168.6M
The Seahawks locked up their young star WR to the richest wide receiver contract in NFL history by total value. At $42.2M per year, JSN becomes the highest-paid WR in the league. He recorded 112 catches for 1,487 yards and 11 TDs in 2025, making this deal a statement that Seattle is building around a franchise receiver. Fantasy impact: elite WR1 for the next four years in all formats.

Free Agent Signing
Davante Adams to Los Angeles Rams — 3 Years, $90M
The Rams signed the veteran WR to pair with Puka Nacua and give Matthew Stafford a true #1 target in what may be his final elite seasons. Adams brings elite route running and red zone dominance. At 33, the years-per-dollar value is concerning long-term, but for a Rams team in win-now mode, this makes them an immediate Super Bowl contender. Fantasy: locked in as a WR2 with upside in a heavy-target offense.

Luka Dončić Traded to Los Angeles Lakers (NBA)
Not an NFL move — but the blockbuster NBA trade that sent Dončić to LA dominated sports headlines during NFL free agency week. Several NFL agents noted the cross-sport attention shifted momentum in negotiations, as teams rushed to close deals before the news cycle moved on. Released
Deshaun Watson Released by Cleveland Browns
Cleveland officially moved on from the Watson era, releasing the quarterback and absorbing a massive $72M dead cap charge that will cripple their offseason flexibility for the next two years. Watson played just 12 games over three seasons in Cleveland, a disastrous outcome for a trade that sent three first-round picks to Houston. The Browns will now pursue a new QB either in free agency or the draft. This remains the worst contract in NFL history by outcome-vs-cost.

Christian Wilkins Signs with Las Vegas Raiders — 4 Years, $110M
The Raiders addressed their interior defensive line need with the best interior DL in free agency. Wilkins brings elite run-stopping and pass rush from the 3-tech position. Pairing him with the #4 overall pick (Abdul Carter, EDGE) gives Las Vegas the makings of a terrifying defensive front. This signing signals the Raiders are serious about their rebuild timeline.

Best and Worst Free Agent Signings of 2026

Best Signing: Jaxon Smith-Njigba Extension (Seattle)

Extending JSN before he hit free agency was the smartest move of the offseason. At 22 years old, he already plays like a 10-year veteran with elite route running and hands. The Seahawks secured their franchise wide receiver during his team-controlled years before he could demand an even larger deal. The $42.2M AAV is premium pricing, but for a legitimate WR1 in his prime years, the value is exceptional.

Worst Move: Deshaun Watson Release (Cleveland)

This goes beyond "worst signing of 2026" — it is the culmination of the worst trade and contract in modern NFL history. Cleveland sent three first-round picks to Houston, signed Watson to $230M fully guaranteed, then watched him play 12 games in three seasons. The $72M dead cap hit in 2026 essentially freezes the Browns' roster-building ability for two full years. No team in NFL history has paid more for so little.

NFL Cap Space Rankings 2026

Teams with cap space have the flexibility to make big free agent moves. Teams buried in dead cap are forced to rely on the draft and veteran minimums. Here's where every team stands heading into 2026:

New York Giants~$85MRebuilding — cleared major contracts
Las Vegas Raiders~$75MActive spenders — roster reset mode

How NFL Free Agency Works

The NFL free agency period officially opens on March 13 each year (the "legal tampering" period begins two days before). Players who are not under contract — either having played out their deal or been released — can negotiate with any of the 32 teams.

Unlike the NBA, NFL contracts are not fully guaranteed. A player signed to a 5-year, $100M deal may only be guaranteed $40M — the rest depends on them being on the roster each year the money is due. This is why teams can cut expensive veterans without fully absorbing their cap hit, though some dead cap usually remains.

Fantasy tip: Follow free agency closely in March and April. Players who change teams often see their ADP drop significantly even when their talent hasn't changed — that's your opportunity. A WR who signs with a pass-heavy offense is often undervalued for 3–4 rounds in fantasy drafts conducted before the season.
