About the 2026 World Cup

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the 23rd edition of the tournament and the largest ever staged. For the first time, 48 nations take part, and for the first time a single World Cup is shared across three host countries: the United States, Canada and Mexico. The opening match is Mexico against South Africa at the historic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City — the first stadium to host games at three different men's World Cups — and the final is played at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

The 48 teams are drawn into twelve groups of four. The top two from each group, plus the eight best third-placed teams, progress to a brand-new Round of 32, after which the competition follows a straight knockout path to the final. In all, 104 matches are played across 16 host cities. Many of the questions in this quiz draw on that format, while others reach into the tournament's rich history — the record five-time winners Brazil, top scorer Miroslav Klose, and the unforgettable moments that have defined football's greatest stage.
