Eid ul Adha commemorates one of Islam's most profound acts of faith — the moment when Prophet Ibrahim (AS) was commanded by Allah to sacrifice his beloved son, Prophet Ismail (AS). In an extraordinary display of obedience and trust, Ibrahim prepared to fulfill this command. At the last moment, Allah (SWT) intervened and replaced Ismail with a ram, declaring that His servant had fulfilled the commandment. This event is referenced in the Holy Quran, Surah As-Saffat (37:102–107).
Every year on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah, Muslims around the world honour this supreme act of devotion by performing Qurbani — the ritual sacrifice of an animal — and distributing the meat among family, neighbours, and those in need.
Muslims gather at mosques and open grounds for the special Eid prayer in congregation, followed by the Imam's khutbah (sermon).
A sheep, goat, cow, or camel is sacrificed. The meat is divided equally: one-third for family, one-third for relatives, one-third for the needy.
Families dress in their finest clothes, visit relatives, and exchange gifts and heartfelt Eid Mubarak wishes throughout the celebration.
Tables are laden with traditional dishes — biryani, haleem, seviyan, ma'amoul cookies, and more — enjoyed with family and guests.
Eid ul Adha is a time of generosity. Many donate Zakat, Sadaqah, and Qurbani meat to the poor to ensure everyone celebrates.
Eid al-Adha coincides with the completion of Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca — the fifth pillar of Islam and the largest human gathering.
The Day of Arafah falls on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah, the day before Eid ul Adha. In 2026, it is Tuesday, 26 May. During Hajj, millions of pilgrims gather on the plain of Mount Arafat in Mecca for the most important rite of the pilgrimage — standing in prayer and supplication from midday until sunset. For Muslims not performing Hajj, fasting on this day is strongly recommended and is said to expiate the sins of the previous and coming year.
