Nag Panchami is a traditional Hindu festival dedicated to the worship of Nagas, or serpent deities. It is observed on the fifth day (Panchami) of the bright half of the lunar month of Shravan (July/August). People across India - especially in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal - offer prayers to snakes, both real and symbolic, seeking protection from harm and blessings of fertility, rain, and prosperity.
Snakes are considered divine in Hinduism, associated with powerful deities like Lord Shiva (who wears Vasuki as a garland), Lord Vishnu (who reclines on Sheshnag), and Lord Krishna (who subdued Kaliya). Nag Panchami is not only a celebration of this ancient symbolism but also an ecological reminder to respect nature and its creatures.
Nag Panchami will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 29, 2025. The festival date varies each year according to the lunar calendar.
