Subho Ashtami – Also Known as Durga Ashtami or Durga Austami or Virashtami

সর্বমঙ্গলমঙ্গল্যে শিবে সর্বার্থসাধিকে
শরণ্যে ত্র্যম্বকে গৌরি নারায়ণি নমোস্তু তে
*শুভ মহাষ্ঠমী*

Maa Durga manifested herself on the day of Maha Ashtami, with her eight forms, namely Kameshwari, Vaishnavi, Brahmacharini, Varahi, Maheshwari, Indrani, Narasinghi and Maa Chamunda. Each of these form holds a special significance and aspect of Maa, and all these forms are worshipped on this day.

It is also the day, when all the Gods gave their weapons (astras) to Her, to gain victory over Mahisasura, the demon, and hence it is a common practice to worship the astras, or the weapons on this day, with a special astra puja.

The 64 Yoginis, Ma Durga and the Ashtanayikas, and Ma Kali are specially worshipped on this day.

Kumari puja, or kanya pujas are also performed in this day, to celebrate and worship the female form of Maa durga, and her reflection on the human female form. Swami Vivekananda was a particular patron of this form of puja, and his practice is still followed in the Ram Krishna ashrams across the world. The kumari puja is worship of 1, or 9 girls, who are yet to attain puberty, as the human form of Maa Durga.

It is also believed that Mata Gauri, consort of Lord Shiva and eighth incarnation of Maa Durga, was also born on the day of Maha Ashtami. Mata Gauri is regarded as a devotee’s mother, who solves obstacles and blesses with good life, happiness and good health to her devotees.

The Nine forms of Durga

These are the nine forms of Durga, her manifestations:

Kushmanda, Shilaputri, Chandraghanta, Brahmacharini, Kalaratri, Mahagauri, Skandamata, Katyayani, and Siddhidatri.

The most important point of the entire durga puja festival, is the Sandhi puja, which happens on the juncture of the time, when Ashtami ends and Nabami begins. Sacrifices, of mostly fruits and vegetables are made on this juncture, though only a few places still carry on the animal sacrifices. Devotees fast on the entire day of Ashtami, till Sandhi puja ends and Navami begin.

Donot forget to wish all your friends on the Auspicious day of Maha Ashtami with our Subho Ashtami images, greeting cards and pictures, which would be perfect for sharing in your WhatsApp groups, Facebook, Instagram and even emails and Messenger.
