Advent is the season of hopeful waiting and preparation before Christmas. The word comes from the Latin adventus, meaning “coming.” Christians use these weeks to prepare for the celebration of Jesus Christ’s birth and to look forward to his promised return. In Western churches, the first Sunday of Advent also opens the new church year.
Families and churches mark the season by lighting a candle on the Advent wreath each Sunday, reading Scripture, praying together and doing small acts of kindness. Sending an Advent card is a simple way to share that spirit of hope, peace, joy and love with friends and relatives near and far.

Many churches also light a white Christ candle in the centre of the wreath on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. Some use blue candles instead of purple, and the names given to each week vary between traditions.
The Advent wreath began in the 1830s at the Rauhes Haus, a home for orphaned and neglected boys in Hamburg, Germany, run by the Lutheran pastor Johann Hinrich Wichern. He lit a candle for each day of Advent, with larger candles for the Sundays, to help the children count down to Christmas. Over time the wreath shrank to the four Sunday candles most homes and churches use today.
The two are often confused. The Advent season always starts on the fourth Sunday before Christmas, so its first day moves each year, between 27 November and 3 December. Most Advent calendars ignore this and simply count down from 1 December to 24 December, one door a day.

Advent 2026 begins on Sunday, 29 November 2026, the fourth Sunday before Christmas, and ends on Christmas Eve, Thursday, 24 December 2026.
Advent 2026 lasts 26 days, from Sunday, 29 November to Thursday, 24 December. Advent always has four Sundays, but its length changes each year between 22 and 28 days, depending on which day of the week Christmas falls.
In many Western churches the four candles stand for hope, peace, joy and love, one lit on each Sunday of Advent. Three are purple and the third, lit on Gaudete Sunday, is rose or pink. Some churches use blue candles instead of purple, and many add a white Christ candle in the centre at Christmas.
The third Sunday of Advent is Gaudete Sunday, from the Latin word for rejoice. Its rose-coloured candle marks a lighter, joyful pause halfway through a season of waiting and preparation.
Not exactly. The Advent season starts on the fourth Sunday before Christmas, so its start date moves each year. Most Advent calendars simply count down from 1 December to 24 December.
