What is Thanksgiving?
Thanksgiving is a national holiday in the United States and Canada for giving thanks for the harvest and the blessings of the past year, usually shared over a family meal of roast turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie.
In the United States, the holiday traces back to the 1621 harvest feast shared by the Plymouth colonists and the Wampanoag people. Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Day of Thanksgiving on October 3, 1863, for the last Thursday of November, and President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the law fixing it to the fourth Thursday of November on December 26, 1941. In Canada, a 1957 parliamentary proclamation set Thanksgiving on the second Monday of October.
From paper cards to WhatsApp images
Traditional Thanksgiving cards carried autumn images of colorful leaves, pumpkins and turkeys, with a handwritten note inside. Today most Thanksgiving greetings travel as images on WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram, reaching family and friends instantly wherever they live.
