Why Halloween falls on 31 October
Halloween takes its date from the Christian calendar: 31 October is the eve of All Saints Day, kept on 1 November. The evening was known as All Hallows Eve, which contracted over the centuries into Halloween. Layered underneath that is the older Celtic festival of Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest and the start of the dark half of the year, when the boundary between the living and the dead was thought to thin. Bonfires, disguises and offerings left out for wandering spirits all belong to that older layer, and they survive today as jack-o-lanterns, costumes and trick-or-treating.
In 2026 the date falls on a Saturday, which is the arrangement most families prefer — no school the next morning, so trick-or-treating rounds start earlier and parties run later.
