Happy Father's Day, Dad. The years go by and the missing doesn't shrink — it just changes shape. Today I'll carry every lesson you left me, the way I always do. Loved. Remembered. Always.
The American Father's Day has two founding moments, both born of loss. In July 1908, after the Monongah mining disaster in West Virginia killed 361 men — about 250 of them fathers — Grace Golden Clayton suggested her local church hold a service to honour them. It was a one-time tribute, but the idea was planted.
The lasting push came two years later from Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington. Raised by her widowed father, a Civil War veteran who brought up six children alone, she heard a Mother's Day sermon in 1909 and asked, simply: why not the same for dads? She lobbied churches, the local YMCA, and city officials. On June 19, 1910, Spokane held what is widely accepted as the first Father's Day celebration.
It took decades for the holiday to become permanent. President Woodrow Wilson honoured the day from Washington in 1916. Calvin Coolidge urged states to observe it in 1924. President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation in 1966. And finally, in 1972, President Richard Nixon signed Father's Day into federal law — permanently fixing it on the third Sunday of June.
Father's Day 2026 in the United States falls on Sunday, June 21. It is always observed on the third Sunday of June. The same date applies in the United Kingdom, Canada, India, France and most other countries that follow the third-Sunday-in-June tradition.
The date was chosen by Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, who first proposed Father's Day in 1909. She originally suggested June 5 (her own father's birthday) but the local Ministerial Alliance moved it to the third Sunday in June to give pastors more time to prepare their sermons. President Nixon signed the third-Sunday-in-June date into federal law in 1972.
Lead with a personal greeting, say thank you for something specific (his advice, his patience, a memory), name a quality that makes him him, then close with love. Two to four sentences is the sweet spot for a card; one or two for a text. The sentiment matters far more than the length — a short, specific message lands harder than a long generic one.
For a brand-new dad, lean into the role he is just stepping into: "Happy first Father's Day. Watching you become a dad has been one of the best things I've ever seen — your little one is so lucky." Keep it warm and specific; first-Father's-Day messages are kept and re-read.
